Who Else Heard the Cry for Liberty
& Lord Dunmore's Promise of Freedom
History tells us that Patrick Henry's 'Liberty or Death' speech had a profound effect on the members of the House of Burgesses, swaying them to put their lives on the line, and take up arms against the King.
What History does not tell us is that members of the House of Burgesses enslaved men who also attended the convention, and that these men were just as affected by this speech as the delegates.
Who were they and what actions did they plot after hearing this iconic speech?
