St. John's Church, a National Historic Landmark, conducts educational programming throughout the year for fourth-grade students. The permanent exhibition in our Visitor Center explores the history of Richmond, political elections in the eighteenth century, events leading to the American Revolution, the delegates to the Second Virginia Convention, and Patrick Henry’s political career.

School Visits
Schools tours include: highlights of the graveyard, where numerous individuals prominent in Richmond and Virginia history are buried; and inside the Church, a description of the events in Virginia that led to the American Revolution and the vigorous debates of the Second Virginia Convention, during which Patrick Henry delivered his famous "give me liberty or give me death” speech.

Education staff conducts the tour in support of Virginia's Standards of Learning in History and Social Sciences, VS.1, VS.4, VS.5, USI.1, USI.5, USI.6. Please contact the Visitor Center at 804-648-5015 if you are interested in making group reservations.

$3.00 Students

Two adults are admitted free per bus.

Historical Reenactments
A historical reenactment brings history to life for your students at the original location of the Second Virginia Convention of March 1775. Professional actors in 1770s attire portray ten of the “founding fathers” who participated in the animated convention debates culminating in Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death” speech. Performances can be scheduled any day of the week, during normal operating hours or evening. Seating capacity is 325. Please call our Visitor Center at 804-648-5015

Educational Activities

However, teachers may adapt these for classroom use based upon the needs and levels of the students they teach.

Activity #2: American Revolution Card Match Game
In this activity, students will use analytical skills to identify the definition or description that accompanies each person or idea related to the American Revolution. Each description, name, or idea is on one of the following cards. Students can work independently or in groups to cut out and manipulate the cards in order to match them. The ideas can then be reviewed in class, cards can be mounted on construction paper and illustrated, or be used to create an interactive class 'bulletin board' about the American Revolution. This

Activity #4: Characterizing Heroes of the American Revolution
The following four men are heroes of the revolutionary era in American History. Use the word bank provided to choose character traits that describe each of these patriots. At the end of each list, use what you have learned about the person to add a character trait of your own. Choose two of these heroes and compare and contrast their attributes. How are they alike and different? How were their roles in the Revolution alike and different? Why do you think it is important to have different people with different strengths, knowledge, and viewpoints fighting for an important cause? Activity #5: Identifying Accomplishments
Ask students to use various resources (such as trade books, textbooks, and the internet) to research each and record notes in the spaces provided. Students can discuss their findings in groups and create a class chart with the four men's major accomplishments. You could also have a secondary focus on how to decipher information resources and glean important information and evaluate what is important and what is secondary. If you had been a delegate at the Convention, would Patrick Henry's speech have convinced you to vote for revolution, or do you think you might have been more inclined to remain loyal to England or adopt a 'wait and see' attitude? Explain your thinking.

Activity #8: Sequencing Revolutionary Events
If you wanted to make this a little more kinesthetic for students, you may want to put these on cards that they can cut out, move around until they got the sequence right, then glue down and create a 'time line' with - then as an extension they could add dates -for some or all the events.
